    Sep 2016: PMLG 2016 Award Winners Announced!

    The 2016 Public and Mobile Library Award winners have been announced! There are so many outstanding, vibrant, enthusiastic and downright heroic library employees out there, that it is hard to award just a few of them each year. No librarian works in isolation, however, so the recipients of these accolades share their honour with their colleagues, their constituencies and their communities. Congratulations to them all!

    August 2016 - PMLG is Recruiting

    The PMLG committee is looking to recruit new people from amongst its Group members. No experience is necessary, as training and support will be provided by current committee members,  just enthusiasm, creativity and the ability to challenge 'perceived wisdom'. This is your chance to support public libraries across the country, to help shape CILIP's future, to be involved in national events and to have your say in making policy.

    Oct 2015: PMLG Award Winners Announced

    On Friday the 9th October 2015, three outstanding public library staff received recognition for their achievements, at the Public and Mobile Libraries Group conference Awards Dinner. The 100 strong gathering of public sector library staff applauded the remarkable customer service, expertise and professionalism of the three winners, who were each in turn presented with a personalised engraved trophy and CPD prize.

    Public libraries play a key role in digital inclusion both in provision of access to hardware and software and, more importantly, in engaging and training reluctant users.

    Nov 2014: IFLA Section Standing Committees Recruitment

    Every two years there are elections to IFLA Section Standing Committees, which are similar to CILIP’s Special Interest Groups (although IFLA itself uses the term “special interest group” for more informal groups whose committees are not formally elected). The call for nominations has now been made for those wanting to serve on a Section Standing Committee for the period 2015-2019.

    The City Business Library (CBL) is a truly unique public library service. Nestled in the heart of London’s commercial district, CBL offers many of the things all public libraries provide – it is an inviting safe space to read, work or use a computer and everybody is welcome. However, CBL also has a unique appeal; it is one of the few places in the country where a person can receive free and expert business information.

    Lorensberg, providers of the Connect2 and NetLoan product ranges for public libraries, have produced a White Paper in response to the introduction of Universal Credit and the general, if rather informal, expectation that public library services provide the facilities and assistance to enable welfare claimants to get online.

    Mar 2014: Manchester Central Library Re-opens - Tour Available

    The historic Manchester central library has been restored, refurbished and re-opened. The new library sensitively balances period features with modern facilities. Manchester Evening News reports an overwhelmingly positive public response to the unveiling of this four year £48 million transformation.     Mar 2014: PMLG Bursaries Announced

    PMLG has created a number of bursaries to help our members with the financial costs of attending events and working on their Continuous Professional Development. All library and information related events such as study days, workshops and conferences will be considered. Up to four bursaries, up to a maximum of £250 per applicant, will be awarded in each financial year.

    Feb 2014: New review of public library services in England announced

    The Department of Culture, Media and Sport and Department for Communities and Local Government have announced a new review of public library services in England.

    Chaired by William Sieghart, who led the government’s review of elending in 2013, the new review will look at the core principles of a public library into the future, if the current model is the most comprehensive and efficient, and the role of community managed libraries.

    As a newly formed group put together from the Branch and Mobile Libraries Group and the Public Libraries group, PMLG has achieved a lot since April.

    Events held included the PMLG Unconference in June, and Mobilemeet in September where Donald Ewan Morrison from the Western Isles Council was awarded Mobile Library Champion of the year.

    Sep 2013: Mobile Library Vehicle Awards Announced

    On Saturday 14th September mobile libraries from all over the United Kingdom converged in Chorley, Lancashire for the annual MobileMeet. As well as enjoying an entertaining and informative programme of mobile library related talks, attendees showed off the unique qualities of their library vehicles. The judging panel had a hard time choosing between a stunning array of practical, innovative and well-maintained mobiles, but the award winners were as follows:
